Bolobedu Solar Plant - South Africa
South Africa has added a major boost to its renewable energy capacity with the commissioning of the Bolobedu Solar Plant, a 148MW photovoltaic project completed in April this year.
Developed by Rio Tinto, the plant is expected to generate about 300GWh of electricity annually, feeding into the national grid and supporting efforts to strengthen energy security and diversify the country’s power mix.
According to the Government Communication and Information System, the project highlights the impact of public-private collaboration in driving infrastructure investment and economic growth.
The 347-hectare development created around 800 jobs during construction, with a focus on skills development, local participation, and support for women-led enterprises.
Government said the project underscores the role of renewable energy in addressing ongoing electricity challenges while advancing climate goals, adding that it remains committed to enabling further investment in sustainable energy infrastructure.
