Offshore Oil Drilling Campaign - Somalia
Somalia has launched its first offshore oil drilling campaign, marking a significant step in its efforts to unlock natural resource-driven growth.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ali Omar said the initiative could boost economic prospects and strengthen strategic ties with Turkey, describing it as a potential turning point for both the national economy and regional energy dynamics.
The campaign follows the arrival of the Turkish research vessel Cagri Bey, which is set to drill the Curad-1 well—Somalia’s first officially drilled offshore site.
The move builds on a 2024 energy cooperation agreement between Somalia and Turkey, as well as earlier seismic surveys conducted by the vessel Oruc Reis across three offshore blocks.
Officials say the project signals growing international partnerships and could position Somalia as an emerging player in the regional energy sector.
